Jaime Escalante, the math teacher portrayed in the movie "Stand and Deliver," will speak at Utah Valley Community College at noon May 17 in the Student Center Ballroom.

Escalante, who was portrayed in the 1988 movie by Edward J. Almos, said, "I am just a math teacher. I'm trying to help my students achieve their highest potential."Escalante motivated his Hispanic students at James A. Garfield High School in East Los Angeles to set standards in mathematics. His students have consistently obtained high scores on the advanced-placement calculus test and ranked seventh in the nation.

Escalante immigrated to the United States in 1964 after teaching math and physics in Bolivia for 11 years. After he received his teaching credentials in 1974, Escalante took a considerable cut in pay to once again be a math teacher.
