The following is a list of major events this summer marking the bicentennial of the French Revolution. Events take place in Paris unless otherwise indicated.

- May 4: Historic re-enactment in Versailles of procession that opened the first parliamentary meeting in centuries, followed by fireworks at the palace of Versailles.- June 17, 18: "Unprecedented" sound-and-light show and unveiling of giant birthday cake at the Eiffel Tower to mark the tower's 100th anniversary and the bicentennial.

- June 20: National Assembly, the French parliament, celebrates 200th anniversary with inauguration of exposition depicting great moments in its history.

- June 25: Descendants of revolutionary-era Parisians, tracked down in a campaign by city of Paris, parade to the Champs de Mars for inauguration of new Human Rights monument.

- July: Inauguration of the Great Arch of the Defense complex, site of July 14-16 economic summit of industrialized democracies and of monument to the bicentennial.

- July 8: United States and France celebrate their mutual fights for independence with parade to Chaillot palace, featuring units from all 50 American states.

- July 9-16: Tall ships from around the world, including the American World War II ship, Eagle, gather off Rouen for Europe's largest parade of ships.

- July 13: Inauguration of the new Opera House and "world's largest ball" on the Place de la Bastille.

- July 14: Traditional military parade down the Champs Elysee followed by international procession honoring the Marseillaise.

- July 15: Fireworks and musical extravaganza offered by city of Paris at the Eiffel Tower.

- July 26-Aug. 6: World's largest hot-air ballon festival, bringing 789 hot-air balloons to the small town of Gouin in the Lorraine region.
