A former Provo resident scheduled to stand trial Monday in 4th District Court on two counts of aggravated child sexual abuse has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of child sexual abuse.
John R. Carpenter, who previously pleaded not guilty to the charges, averted trial Monday by pleading guilty to the lesser charge, a second-degree felony. The guilty plea resulted from plea negotiations with the Utah County attorney's office.Carpenter will be sentenced June 9. He faces a possible prison term of up to 15 years.
The charges against Carpenter, now a Connecticut resident, stem from the alleged abuse of two 8-year-old girls from Orem and Provo in November 1987. Additional charges stemming from related incidents will be dropped pending the defendant's imprisonment or commitment to a treatment center.
