Juanita Clayton's grand slam and seven RBI carried Utah State to an 11-0 win over Southern Utah State as the Lady Aggies completed round-robin play unbeaten in the women's softball Utah/Utah State Invitational Friday at Cottonwood Complex.
Utah State leads the seven teams who were seeded into a single-elimination championship tournament today, beginning at 10 a.m. The championship game will be at 4 p.m.Terri Rice tossed a two-hitter for USU in the five-inning game against Southern Utah, halted by a run rule. Until facing Utah State, SUSC was the tournament's surprise team. With Genie Turley pitching both games, SUSC downed Nevada-Reno 4-1 and blanked Colorado State 3-0. Utah State had defeated Ohio State 3-1 behind Julie Starratt's pitching.
SUSC is today's No. 3 seed, behind Arizona. Utah is No. 4, after losing 5-4 to Arizona in extra innings and defeating Ohio State 3-0 on Paula Potter's three-hitter. Nicki Dennis' homer leading off the bottom of the eighth inning had lifted Arizona past Utah.
Utah State has a bye into the semifinals of today's play. In the opening-round games, Utah plays Nevada-Reno and SUSC meets Ohio State at 10 a.m. and Arizona plays Colorado State at noon. If the Lady Utes win their game, they'll play Utah State in the semifinals at noon. Opening-game losers will play for the consolation title.
