Utah writers are spending time in schools in Salt Lake City and Tooele during May to help children express themselves through the written word.

Dorothy Solomon, author of "In My Father's House," is an artist in residence at Bonneville Elementary to stimulate children's interest in this art form. Bonneville is a model arts school for Utah and emphasizes the use of the arts in all areas of the core curriculum, said Juneil Lyon, on-site residency coordinator.Stephen Ruffus, a poet, is at Harris Elementary School in Tooele, helping staff and children to increase their skills in his area of expertise. He invites students to talk about emotions and ideas that are expressed in certain poems and then helps them to use these discussions to enrich their own writing assignments.

Both writers are co-sponsored by the Utah Arts Council through its Arts in Education program.
