Ian Tyson, Canada's true singing cowboy, will be in Salt Lake City on May 4 for an 8:30 p.m. show at the Westerner.

The concert will be a benefit for the Western Folklife Center, and the proceeds will go to further the Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nev.Back in the '60s, Tyson and his wife, Sylvia - known as Ian and Sylvia - brought their particular brand of hardscrabble Alberta folk music to America with a flourish.

In the mid-'70s, Tyson returned to Canada to raise cutting horses, write music and do some selective performing.

His songs, including "Someday Soon," "Four Strong Winds" and "Double Diamond," capture the modern West, and his most recent album, "Cowboyography," won several Canadian country music awards.
