No. 6-ranked Arizona rallied in the seventh inning, scoring the winning run on a bases-loaded walk for a 4-3 victory over Utah in the championship game of the women's softball Utah/Utah State Invitational Saturday at Cottonwood Complex.
After Wendi Warhurst's two-out, two-run double had given Utah a 3-1 lead into the top of the seventh, Arizona loaded the bases against Utah pitcher Paula Potter. Tourney MVP Kristin Gauthier brought home two runs with a double to right-center field. Later, with two outs and the bases loaded again, Suzie Lady took six straight pitches, walking on a 3-2 count.Utah had missed chances to build a bigger lead. In the fifth, the Lady Utes had gained a 1-1 tie when Charmelle Green singled and later scored on an error, but Warhurst was thrown out at home on the same play. In the seventh, Shannon Fillmore was thrown out trying to score on Chriss Freeman's single, before Green walked and Warhurst delivered her double.
Utah (23-24) had also almost knocked off the Lady Wildcats in round-robin play Friday, falling 5-4 in eight innings. Saturday, the Lady Utes downed Nevada-Reno 6-0 behind the pitching of Lisa Glassford and handled Utah State 7-2 in the semifinals. Warhurst drove in two runs and Kristan Burtoft had three hits, while Utah broke the game open with five second-inning runs.
Southern Utah State blanked Ohio State 1-0 on Genie Turley's five-hitter to reach the semifinals, but lost 2-0 to Arizona as Lisa Bautista pitched a two-hitter.
