A Provo man scheduled to stand trial next month on charges of sexually abusing a child pleaded guilty Friday to one of those charges and will be sentenced May 26.

Bruce H. Elm, 54, originally was charged with one count of sodomy of a child and two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies, between 1983-86. In March, he pleaded not guilty to those charges but changed his plea on one of the abuse charges following plea negotiations with prosecutors.Elm faces a possible minimum mandatory sentence of three, six or nine years in prison as part of a sentence of five years to life, 4th District Judge Cullen Y. Christensen said. But because of the state's incest-exception rule, the judge said, Elm may be a candidate for probation and avoid a mandatory sentence.
