Dr. John Whiteley, a Sandy veterinarian, examines Baby, 14, a Maltese poodle. The dog has serious hearing and sight problems and North Salt Lake audiologist Allan L. Anderson wants to change that. He believes the pooch will be the first in Utah to be outfitted with a hearing aid. Sharon Smith of North Salt Lake owns the dog and is willing to pay for the approximately $600 procedure. Smith, who said her dog is still as active as a puppy, also plans to pay between $300 to $500 for an eye operation; Baby is nearly blind. Anderson, who along with Whiteley will design a sort of hearing-aid bonnet, took an ear impression Friday and expects to install the hearing aid within 10 days.
