Lightning struck a cemetery bell tower, toppling part of the concrete structure onto a homeless man sleeping inside and killing him, authorities said Friday.
"He never had a chance," Assistant Fire Chief Richard Dunn said. "It appears the first floor fell on him."The victim was identified as Jay Oleson, 22, of Aurora.
The accident happened late Wednesday or early Thursday at East Lawn Cemetery, where Oleson had been watching the restoration of the 60-year-old bell tower.
Oleson was fascinated with the tower, which was to be finished and rededicated on Memorial Day, said Clyde Brown, who was restoring it. Brown, who had befriended Oleson, said he apparently entered the tower late Wednesday.
