A West German described by U.S. authorities as "the world's top techno-bandit" was sentenced to an additional two and a half years in prison and fined $40,000 for a daring helicopter prison escape attempt.

U.S. District Judge William Stafford sentenced Werner Bruchhausen, 49, to 30-month concurrent sentences Thursday on each of two counts of conspiracy to escape. The term will be tacked onto a 15-year term Bruchhausen received in 1987 for sales of classified technology to Soviet bloc countries.
