From the Hebrews led out of Egypt by Moses to the early Christians in Rome to the Mayflower Pilgrims and the Mormons who came to Utah, the struggle for religious freedom has moved men throughout history.
The Rev. Thomas Meersman, director of special affairs for the Catholic Diocese of Utah, recalled those examples Wednesday at this year's second downtown devotional service.Although beliefs differ, "we can all learn one from the other. The thing we have together is our faith," he told those gathered at Daynes Music Co.'s Steinway Hall.
It's important to remember those who struggled in the past for religious freedom, he said.
Future devotional services will feature Harry P. Sweitzer, pastor emeritus of First Presbyterian Church, on May 3; and Elder J. Thomas Fyans, First Quorum of the Seventy, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on May 10.
