A rare poster advertising the Beatles at Hamburg's Kaiserkeller was sold for $5,950 to an unidentified person from Japan bidding by telephone, Phillips auctioneers in London said.

The poster dates from around 1960, advertising performances by "original rock 'n' roll bands" featuring the Beatles and Rory Storm and his Hurricanes.Beatles drummer Ringo Starr played for the Hurricanes before he joined the Beatles who, like some other British groups, were famous in West Germany before they made the big time at home.

The poster made the top price in Wednesday's sale of 283 lots of pop and rock music memorabilia, which totaled $181,000.

A Fender Stratocaster cream guitar once owned by Sting, former lead singer of Police, was bought by Warwick Stone of the Hard Rock Cafe in Los Angeles for $5,500.
