Designated hitter Brent Brown hit for the cycle to lead BYU to a 12-11 victory Saturday over Wyoming, while the Cowboys won the opener, 8-4.

Brown homered in both games, but hit for the single-double-triple-home run combination in the nightcap. He hit his second double of the game as the Cowboys forced the Cougars into the extra eighth inning. Brown was a perfect 5-for-5 in the nightcap and 2-for-2 in the loss.The Cougars stranded nine men on base in the opener, while Wyoming pounded 11 singles and got a good pitching performance from Scott Freeman. In the nightcap BYU stranded 11, while Wyoming left nine on base.

BYU got the better pitching performance in the nightcap when starter Bart Grubbs struck out nine Cowboys in nearly six innings. But Wyoming pieced together a three-run seventh-inning rally to force the game into extra innings.

At Fort Collins, Colo., pitchers Jay Hardy and Frank Gonzales each turned in complete-game victories Saturday as Colorado State swept a doubleheader from Utah, taking the first 3-0 and the nightcap 7-2.

Hardy pitched a two-hit shutout in the first game, while Gonzales allowed just three hits in the Rams' second win.



At Helper, Utah Valley Community College got a pair of three-hitters from their mound staff but still managed only a split in Saturday's doubleheader with the College of Eastern Utah.

UVCC won the opener on the strength of Todd Asay's arm and Brian Santiago's three-run homer. In game two, loser Mike Morrow tossed a three-hitter, but CEU took advantage of five UVCC errors to get four unearned runs.
