Columbia University has announced that Steven Douglas Carter, associate professor of Asian languages at Brigham Young University, is a winner of the 1989 Friendship Commission Prize for the Translation of Japanese Literature.

The Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture at Columbia selected Carter's "Waiting for the Wind: 36 Poets of Japan's Late Medieval Age," along with "Confessions of Love," translated by Phyllis Birnbaum, as the 1989 winners "because they each masterfully represent important and extremely diverse genres of Japanese literature.Carter joined the faculty at BYU in 1980.
