The Utah Transportation Commission approved a highway improvement project Friday that will widen 54th South to four lanes between 19th West and 32nd West.

The project, scheduled to begin next year, will also realign the South Jordan Canal Road where it intersects with 54th South to a point east of its present alignment to allow left turns on and off of 54th South. The commission also passed a motion to support efforts of Uintah and Grand counties in developing and constructing a new highway in eastern Utah. The highway, proposed as an addition to U.S. 191, is planned to run north from Cisco to Ouray. Advocates believe it will provide needed transportation service to the energy-producing areas of eastern Utah and allow for improved service between Utah's national parks and the Yellowstone/Grand Teton area.
