Local residents who have donated $15 to a shrine in American Fork honoring Betsy Ross should call Detective Mike Larsen at the Orem Department of Public Safety.
On Monday, Larsen apprehended a 66-year-old Provo man who was wanted in connection with a county warrant for failure to appear. The man was soliciting funds for the apparently fictitious shrine, claiming that it would feature the largest American flag ever made, according to Gerald Nielson, department public information officer.Officers were aware that the man was soliciting donations in Utah County, Nielsen said, but they were not aware of how much. A number of checks have been confiscated, but many were diverted into the man's personal funds.
The man is being held in the Utah County jail.
