With the theme "The Arts . . . Heartbeat of Our Senses," Utah's 18th annual Festival of Arts for the Young will take place April 24-28, involving more than 400,000 students throughout the state.
Opening ceremonies will take place at 1 p.m. Monday in Howard R. Driggs Elementary School, 4340 S. 27th East, said Avery Glenn, state festival chairman and music education specialist. Honorary chairman Ruth Funk, chairman of the State Board of Education, will read the proclamation issued by Lt. Gov. Val Oveson, and music will be provided by singers from Hunter Elementary School and the string quartet of Timpview High School.Awards for outstanding school arts programs will be announced by James Moss, state superintendent of public instruction. This year's winners are: Hillcrest Elementary School, Alpine District; Eastwood Elementary School, Granite; Westland Elementary School, Jordan; Wasatch Elementary School, Ogden; Timpview High School, Provo; South Rich Elementary School, Rich; Rosslyn Heights Elementary School, Salt Lake; Pahvant Elementary School, Sevier; and Municipal Elementary School, Weber.
A rich variety of programs, exhibits, workshops, demonstrations and other arts activities will take place in every school district in the state. Parents and friends of the arts are urged to contact their local schools to see what is taking place.
