New York guard Mark Jackson, the 18th pick in last year's NBA Draft who led the Knicks to their first playoff berth in four seasons, Tuesday was named the league's Rookie of the Year in a landslide vote.
Jackson set an NBA record for assists by a rookie with 868. The previous rookie record was held by Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson, who recorded 690 assists in 1961 over 71 games. Jackson played in all 82 regular-season games this season.Jackson ranked third in the NBA in assists and sixth in steals at 2.50 per game. His average of 10.6 assists per game was also a rookie record. Jackson's 205 steals fell six short of the NBA rookie record of 211 set by Dudley Bradley of Indiana in 1980.
Jackson was given the Eddie Gottlieb trophy in voting by three sports writers and broadcasters from each of the 23 NBA cities and 11 members of the national media. He earned 77 of the 80 votes, with Greg Anderson of San Antonio, Winston Garland of Golden State and Kenny Smith of Sacramento getting one each.
