Oakland A's slugger Jose Canseco was arrested Friday after a University of California employee spotted a loaded semi-automatic pistol on the floor of his candy-apple red Jaguar, police said.

Canseco was arrested at about 2 p.m. outside the Laurel Heights complex of the University of California at San Francisco, police said.Canseco was booked on suspicion of possessing a firearm on university property, a felony, and possession of a loaded firearm in the passenger compartment of a vehicle, a misdemeanor. He was booked into the San Francisco Jail and released later on $5,000 bail.

Canseco, who has a recent history of minor brushes with the law, was picked up after a university employee spotted a fully loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol on the floorboards beneath the steering wheel of his flashy Jaguar sports car, said Robert Reisig, chief of the UCSF police.
