Three University of Utah faculty are among 189 scholars nationwide chosen to receive the 1989 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awards. Nationally, the awards total more than $5 million.

Guggenheim Fellows are chosen on the basis of distinguished achievement and exceptional promise, said Joel Conarroe, foundation president.The new Guggenheim Fellows from the U. are Phyllis D. Coley, associate professor of biology for the ecology and evolution of defense mechanisms in young leaves; Karen Lawrence, associate professor of English, for female travel in the British literary tradition; and Peter Li, professor of mathematics, for analytic methods in differential geometry.
