Gangs are responsible for most of the graffiti on the walls of Salt Lake City. Gang members mark up walls to mark their territory as well as say, "I was here." A favorite pastime of gang members is to challenge one another's turf claims, illustrated in this photo, taken in March near the intersection of Ninth West and Seventh South. At the bottom left, , the dark lettering, "LVL," depicts the symbols of a gang called "Los Varrios Locos 14." The lighter lettering, including the initials "TCG," appears to have been done by the "Tongan Crips Gangsters." The "X" through the "LVL" represents a challenge or a threat.
