Prime Minister Zaid Rifai offered his resignation Monday following rioting that swept Jordan because of price increases, official sources said.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was not clear if King Hussein had accepted the resignation. There was no official announcement of any change.

Sources who insisted on anonymity said earlier that Rifai, prime minister since April 1985, had cleaned out his office.

Crown Prince Hassan was quoted Sunday as telling a Saudi Arabian newspaper that last week's riots would not force a change.
