The lure of The Grateful Dead proved too much for an escaped prisoner from Illinois.

Bruce Herriger Friedman, 24, described by McHenry County, Ill., Sheriff George Hendle as a "Deadhead" who followed the band across the country, was arrested on drug charges in Rosemont, Ill., last week during a three night stand by The Grateful Dead. But he escaped from the Woodstock, Ill., lockup early Sunday by pretending to be a man who was being held for drunken driving, Hendle said.

Once free, Friedman followed the Dead to Minnesota only to stumble into an unrelated police drug stakeout Tuesday - one night after the band's concert.

Friedman was to be returned to McHenry County to face the drug charges as well as possible escape charges.
