The Justice Department wants to transfer 30 administrative positions in the Butte FBI office to Salt Lake City, leaving only five agents in Butte.

The Butte office, now Montana-Idaho division headquarters, would become "just a service agency, with the actual law enforcement taking place out of Salt Lake City," Rep. Pat Williams, D-Mont., said.Williams and Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., said they will oppose the change as they opposed a similar move last year.

The proposal was submitted to House and Senate subcommittees that oversee FBI operations.

Maintaining a divisional headquarters in Butte is neither efficient nor cost-effective, Assistant Attorney General Harry H. Flickinger wrote to the committees.
