The book "Sanpete Scenes: A Guide to Utah's Heart," published to mark the 100th anniversary of Snow College, has won for its authors the 1989 John Brinckerhoff Jackson Prize given for popular books about American human geography.

The Association of American Geographers made the award at its annual meeting last week in Baltimore.Humboldt State University geographer Lowell C. Bennion and freelance photographer Gary B. Beterson assembled the book with more than 600 photographs and numerous maps and graphs.

Sections of the book were entitled "A Basin Between Plateaus"; "Centrality and Isolation"; "A Scandinavian Legacy"; "A Grain and Livestock Producer"; and "A Rural, Small-Town Domain."

The association said the book exemplifies "how geographic scholarship can illuminate for the lay public the complicated and fascinating ways that ordinary landscape is modified and ultimately humanized."
