Presidential assailant John W. Hinckley Jr., testifying for the first time, says he wants to hire assassination buff Mark Lane as his lawyer because "he has done very well" defending famous criminals.

"He has taken some cases of national renown," Hinckley said at a federal court hearing, choosing the last word after a long, careful pause."He has represented some people who are famous to the general public," Hinckley told prosecutor Robert R. Chapman. These clients gained notoriety "as criminals, in the criminal world."
