Three Salt Lake residents charged with first-degree murder in the death of a Chinese student face a preliminary hearing May 24.
Reynaldo Casarez, 18, Cynthia Rae Gomez, 18, and Fred Angel Gomez, 18, were arraigned before 3rd Circuit Judge Paul Grant, who ordered the hearing.The three are charged with robbing and murdering Shi Shing Tam, 23, whose body was found April 6 in the Jordan River near 10th South.
The charges contend Tam was taken to Cynthia Gomez's house the night of April 5. Tam was taken by the woman into a bedroom where he was attacked by her, Fred Gomez and Casarez, according to the charges.
An autopsy determined Tam had been strangled, beaten about the head and stabbed.
Tam, of Hong Kong, was attending the University of Utah and working two jobs.
