Salt Lake County has combined two operations into a new division to implement the second phase of a citizen task force feasibility study that resulted in plans to build a new Utah Jazz arena.
The new Salt Palace, Arts and Science Division will combine management of the former Salt Palace and Fine Arts Division with the Hansen Planetarium.County commissioners want the new division to lay groundwork for the development of a new science center and the eventual remodeling of the Salt Palace into convention facilities.
"It's important we capture the momentum and community interest and identify a funding mechanism so that renovation of the Salt Palace can occur when the new arena opens," said Commissioner Bart Barker.
Former County Administrative Services chief John W. Rosenthal will head the new division. Larry A. Meyer, Barker's administrative aide since 1983, will replace Rosenthal at Administrative Services.
The new division and the Contracts and Procurement, Personnel, Facilities Management, Management Information Systems, Job Training and Development and Extension Services divisions will report to Meyer.
Salt Palace manager Sam Driggs and planetarium director Von Del Chamberlain will retain their posts.
