Salt Lake Mayor Palmer DePaulis has joined downtown business owners in calling on the county for more help in getting drunks off the streets.
Pete Suazo, DePaulis' administrative assistant, told Salt Lake County commissioners this week that downtown merchants are growing increasingly concerned about public intoxication. The mayor wants the capacity of the County Jail's detoxification unit increased from the current 59 to 150, so more drunks can be dried out. Michael Martin, who runs a business on Third South, agrees.
"I've retained security officers to help with the problems," caused by drunks, Martin said. "It's affecting our property values."
