Two Utah congressmen were among co-sponsors of a bill introduced Tuesday to repeal a controversial income tax surcharge for senior citizens.

Reps. Howard C. Nielson and Jim Hansen, both R-Utah, joined 28 other House Republicans seeking to undo the surtax that is designed to fund the Catastrophic Health Care Act, which passed by Congress late last year to provide long-term health care.Nielson said, "People in my district are outraged . . . They do not want to be forced to participate in a federal program they did not choose to be in."

He added that 80 percent of the senior citizens to be covered by the bill already have some sort of health insurance for their retirement.
