Don Mellor doesn't limit himself to one volunteer activity. Instead, he donates his time at both Holy Cross Hospital (he's been there since 1986) and Johanna Nursing Home.
Nursing home staffers call Mellor their most dependable volunteer. He helps patients who cannot feed themselves.Mellor seems oblivious to his own limitations. The man, 82 years young, has had a complete hip replacement and several operations on his knee, yet he's given more than 1,400 hours at Holy Cross Hospital alone.
In a recent ceremony honoring outstanding volunteers, it was said of Mellor: "We read from national studies that helping another person in need in a direct way gives volunteers a warm feeling and a sense of well-being. Don Mellow should be very well and should probably feel hot, not warm!"
