A mentally retarded Provo boy was killed Monday night when he was struck by a train.

Alvin Mahlman, 9, had been playing on the tracks for 15 minutes when Provo police were called by concerned residents. At 6:50 p.m., patrolman Dan Stowe was searching at the last known location of the child when Mahlman was struck a few blocks away, at Second West and Sixth South streets."The train whistled, and the boy became confused," Stowe said. "He acted like he didn't know which way to turn. He was standing right between the rails when he was hit."

Stowe said Mahlman apparently died instantly. Mahlman's parents live in another state, Stowe said. The boy was living with foster parents in Provo.
