Tuesday marks the 83rd anniversary of the day the Earth shook and the sky burned in San Francisco.

At 5:13 a.m. on April 18, 1906, the city was rocked by an earthquake that triggered a three-day fire.When the ground calmed and the smoke cleared, more than 500 were dead and 2,593 acres of the city were charred and in broken ruins. Damage was placed at $1 billion.

Many events were scheduled Tuesday to recall that disastrous day.
