Entrants in a "Name the Moose" contest sponsored by the Upper Peninsula Travel and Recreation Association in Iron Mountain, Mich., are advised to avoid submitting the name Bullwinkle.
"We got a lot of Bullwinkle suggestions, but we don't want a name that is already well known," said Cindy Lindeman, the association's officer manager, referring to the popular television cartoon character. The association already has received 7,000 entries in its contest to find an appropriate nickname for the moose. The deadline is Aug. 15."We figure that people know Smokey the Bear and we should have a name for our moose," said Lindeman, who noted that about 120 of the majestic creatures roam the Upper Peninsula. "We've had people send in artwork of a moose on skis and another with a moose holding a fishing pole," Lindeman said. "A lot of people are taking this seriously."
