Elementary students are not to be used in fund-raising efforts outside their immediate families, according to a new commercialism and fund-raising policy approved by the Davis Board of Education.
Regional PTA leaders asked that the board consider banning family fund-raising by elementary students, citing events where such efforts led to child abuse. But board members said those were isolated incidents and they believe, with proper restraint, intra-family efforts are acceptable. The new policy also allows the names of companies donating items such as scoreboards, athletic equipment or academic items to be attached to the donated items. In the past this was not permitted. Board members agreed that a small identification is appropriate and that support should be recognized.
