"Adromeda," a female malemute puppy orphaned when its mother, "Star Gazer," died April 9 while giving birth to her 10th litter, has found a wet nurse doggie mother in Lindon, Utah County.
"Persivus," a male that was the other orphaned puppy, died early Sunday, said the dogs' owner, Debby Gustavson, of the Rose Park area in Salt Lake City. The surviving puppy was offered the loan of another mother by several callers, who began contacting the Gustavsons within hours of publication Sunday of a Deseret News feature story on the plight of the puppies.
"Adromeda" was placed temporarily with "Nikki," a mixed Siberian malemute who took to the puppy like it was her own. The puppy seemed contented but didn't know how to nurse at first from its new mother, owned by Bart and Ellen Axelson, Lindon.
Bart Axelson called the Gustavsons about 8:30 a.m. Sunday, and the Rose Park family received several other calls during the day as a result of the Deseret News story.
"I even have two backups if this doesn't work," Gustavson said. But that apparently won't be necessary.
"I just went out to check on the baby this morning. Nikki has accepted the puppy very well and won't even let me pick it up," Ellen Axelson said Monday. "She has one other puppy, a male, born nearly two weeks ago and that is four times as big. They have almost the same markings. They look like brother and sister. They are so cute; you should see them."
