Pres. George Washington, played by actor William Sommerfield, steps down from a carriage after it broke down in front of Mount Vernon Sunday. The antique carriage was to carry Washington on an eight-day trip from his Virginia mansion to New York City for a re-enactment of his inauguration April 30, 1789. After the carriage broke down the actor jumped into a van. "Strange vehicle, strange vehicle," said Washington of his first automobile ride.
