Hundreds of students in Beijing and Shanghai marched Monday to mourn the death of former Communist Party chief Hu Yaobang, an outspoken reformist toppled by conservatives two years ago."Long live Hu Yaobang, long live democracy, long live freedom, long live the rule of law!" chanted more than 600 students from Beijing's Political Science and Law College.

Hu, who died Saturday at age 73 after suffering a heart attack, was regarded by intellectuals as favoring greater artistic and scholarly freedoms than other Chinese leaders.
