Ten Utah men charged with removing wild burros from the Gold Butte herd north of Mesquite, Nev., have pleaded not guilty to federal misdemeanor charges in U.S. District Court.
The men were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy, misdemeanor removal of burros and injury to a burro. They entered pleas Friday.One of the animals died during the roundup and another died later from stress.
Authorities allege the men illegally rounded up 10 of the animals from Bureau of Land Management range in southern Nevada last month.
The BLM received an anonymous tip about the roundup and officers arrested the men March 12 when they pulled into Mesquite, Nev., with a trailer load of the wild animals.
Named in the indictment are St. George residents Kerry Hafen, Jerry Parker, Harvey Mangum, William Sullivan, Sherrell Newby, Gary Allred, Kenneth Thompson and Robert C. Bowler. Also charged are Bob L. Bowler of Veyo and Wendell Hunt of Enterprise.
