A jury ruled Friday that a 25-year-old man was insane when he shot four people to death in their cars and wounded five others last July while sheriff's deputies waited for orders from superiors.

Michael Charles Hayes, 25, a former moped shop operator from Davidson County, was found not guilty on four counts of first-degree murder and eight counts of assault in the July 17 shooting rampage. The verdict from the Forsyth County jury was announced after 14 hours of deliberations over four days.

Superior Court Judge James Beatty ordered that Hayes be taken into custody and brought to the John Umstead Hospital in Butner, where he will undergo psychiatric treatment before a hearing.
