After years in the automotive business, first repairing U.S. Army trucks and then as owner of Cary's Cars and Vans, Douglas Cary has been recognized by his peers.

Cary was recently given the "1988 Quality Dealer Award" for Utah. The award was presented at a Las Vegas, Nev., convention and is given to the outstanding dealer in member states. It exemplifies the dealer offering excellence in both service and sales.Cary has worked in the auto business most of his life. He started out by working on military vehicles at Tooele, then moving to work in the area of automotive service.

His next move was to own and operate a service station, then to work in the Chevrolet Motor Division zone office. He worked there for 22 years, then became zone service manger of six states.

Given the opportunity to leave Utah and move to Seattle, he opted instead to go into the used car business _ Cary's Cars. His experience allowed him to grow and expand his company.

He now owns two businesses: 1. The new and used car area, complete with a service department with 12 bays, a body shop and parts department; and 2. a lot with new and used custom vans and mini motor homes.

Along with doing business in the Sandy area, Cary also supports programs there. Among them three little league baseball team, one that won the state championship, two soccer teams and a girls softball team that was also state champ. He also has helped set up a scholarship program at the University of Utah.

When the doors to the Salt Lake 500 New Car Sell-Off open this Friday, Cary will have a sampling of some of his vans there for shoppers to see and appreciate.
