Criminal mischief charges have been filed against two southern Utah teenagers accused of firing a bullet into a home while aiming at the city's LDS Temple, police said Tuesday.

"They said they were aiming at the top of the temple from the top of Red Hill, about a mile away," said Lt. Jim Rayburn. The two suspects are accused of firing at least two rounds from a hunting rifle. No bullets struck the religious edifice, but one ripped through the walls of a condominium occupied by two elderly women, Rayburn said.

Neither of the women, aged 72 and 88, was hit, the lieutenant said.

Rayburn said the suspects gave no reason for the incident Sunday.

Randall A. Cain, 19, St. George, and a 17-year-old companion were charged with criminal mischief.

Cain was ordered to appear for a preliminary hearing April 17, and bail was set at $5,000, a 5th Circuit Court clerk said.

The minor, whose identity was withheld, was turned over to juvenile court authorities.
