-APRIL 14-15: The Utah State Poetry Society April Awards Festival is slated for the Ogden Hotel (formerly the Hilton). This year's awards celebration will feature noted poet Janet Sylvester, winner of an Academy of American Poets Prize.

Registration is at 5:30 p.m. Friday and at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Friday evening will feature awards to young local poets. Saturday's schedule will include the President's Luncheon and the annual poetry awards.

-APRIL 15: Ron Carlson, Utah fiction writer, will give a benefit reading for Writers at Work at 7 p.m. in the Phillips Gallery, 444 E. Second South, Salt Lake City.

Carlson is author of "The News of the World," "Truants" and "Betrayed by F. Scott Fitzgerald." He is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed writers Utah has produced.

Fiction writer Ann Beattie will also be on hand as a special guest.

Donations to Writers at Work are accepted. The suggested donation is $7.
