Utah has joined states nationwide in a lawsuit aimed at recovering millions of dollars in unclaimed money, state Attorney General Paul Van Dam said.

Van Dam said Utah could gain $1.3 million through the suit. The federal government has been holding money belonging to people who haven't been located. In the suit, state officials contend the money should belong to the states where the people last lived. The unclaimed money comes from various sources, including overpaid taxes. The states involved in the suit contend the combined total amounts to about $200 million.
