More than 100 high school basketball players are hoping that an eight-hour session will help prepare them for the rigors and requirements of the college recruiting process.
Along with co-sponsors Gatorade and Universal Athletic Supply, the Utah High School Basketball Coaches Association has organized a recruiting seminar, scheduled for Saturday at the Airport Hilton Hotel.Prep coaches were asked to nominate college-prospect sophomore and junior players to attend the all-day seminar, with some 110 from all four school-size classifications and from throughout the state registering for the event.
Four of the featured guest speakers are head coaches of local Division I programs - BYU's Roger Reid, Utah State's Kohn Smith, Weber State's Denny Huston and Southern Utah State's Neil Roberts.
Rick Majerus, recently hired as the head coach at Utah, was scheduled to participate in a clinic in Seattle but, according to Carling, is trying to rearrange his schedule to participate in Salt Lake.
The coaches will comprise a panel, with a 75-minute session geared toward recruiting rules, violations and consequences. Later, Duke Reid, head coach at Utah Valley Community College, will speak on behalf of the junior colleges as an alternative playing opportunity.
BYU Athletic Director Glen Tuckett is slated as the luncheon speaker.
Topics for other sessions include drugs, alcohol and steroids; prevention of and treatment for athletic injuries; Proposition 48, core curriculum and ACT testing; and steps in getting an athletic scholarship in the recruiting process.
MISCELLANEOUS: The next state championships on tap will be the gymnastics meet April 28-29 at Hillcrest High, and the 2A golf meet scheduled for May 8 at Jeremy Ranch . . . .
The BYU Invitational track meet - one of several large-scale invitationals for prep track teams - remains scheduled for May 5 and 6. The BYU-UCLA dual meet originally had been scheduled for the same Saturday - May 6 - but has since been bumped back to Monday, May 8. . . .
The second annual high school 3-point/slam-dunk championships are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Alta High, with male and female participants coming from throughout the state. Tickets are available at the door . . . .
The Bountiful baseball team is hoping that this is indeed a decade of defending championships. You'll recall that the Braves claimed the 1988 crown by beating Taylorsville, a two-time titlist with championships in '86 and '87. Before that, it was Bingham with a pair of title in '84 and '85 and Hillcrest with four straight championships - 1980-83 - to start off the decade.
Meanwhile, the past five 3A baseball trophies have ended up in Utah County - Spanish Fork, 1988; Pleasant Grove, 1987; Springville, 1986; American Fork, 1984-85 . . . .
