Mike Vernon stopped 21 shots for his first career playoff shutout and Hakan Loob scored twice as the Calgary Flames took a 2-1 lead in their Smythe Division semifinal series with a 4-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks Saturday night.

Calgary had only 15 shots on Kirk McLean after taking 83 in the first two games of the series. But Loob and Joe Nieuwendyk scored in the second period and Joe Mullen and Loob completed the scoring in the third.

Game 4 of the best-of-seven series is scheduled for Sunday night at the Pacific Coliseum.

Vernon's toughest save came in the second period when he stopped Brian Bradley in alone after the former Flame worked his way past defenseman Brad McCrimmon.

After a scoreless first period in which both teams failed to capitaize on power-play opportunities, Loob ripped a 40-foot slap shot through McLean's pads at 2:04 for his second goal of the playoffs.

Nieuwendyk, a 51-goal scorer in the regular season, gave the Flames a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal at 11:24, coverting a thread-the-needle pass by rookie Theoren Fleury.

The Flames broke the game when Mullen, who also had 51 goals, rifled a high shot from the right circle past McLean at 1:42 of the third period and Loob scored on a wraparound at 3:36.

The Canucks failed on eight power plays and are 1-for-22 in the first three games.

Capitals 4, Flyers 3

Kelly Miller scored 51 seconds into overtime, giving the Washington Capitals a victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 3 of the Patrick Division semifinals.

Miller picked up the rebound of Mike Ridley's shot behind the goal, circled the net and carried the puck into the left circle. He held the puck while Philadelphia's Rick Tocchet slid past him, then backhanded the puck off the stick of defenseman Kjell Samuelsson and over Hextall's right shoulder.

Bruins 4, Sabres 1

Cam Neely scored two goals, including the game-winner with 5:06 left, to lead the Boston Bruins to a victory over the Buffalo Sabres and a 2-1 lead in their series.

Canadiens 5, Whalers 4

Stephane Richer scored at 5:01 of overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens a victory over the Hartford Whalers and a 3-0 lead in the Adams Division semifinals playoff series.

Penguins 5, Rangers 3

Dan Quinn had two goals and an assist and Tom Barrasso made 42 saves, many of them spectacular, as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the struggling New York Rangers and took a commanding three-game lead in their Patrick Division semifinal series.

Oilers 4, Kings 0

Grant Fuhr stopped 26 shots for his second career playoff shutout and Jari Kurri scored two goals in 71 seconds in the second period as the Edmonton Oilers blanked the Los Angeles Kings in Game 3 the Smythe Division semifinals.

Blackhawks 4, Red Wings 2

Denis Savard and Troy Murray scored early in the third period to give the Chicago Blackhawks a victory over the Detroit Red Wings in Game 3 of their Norris Division semifinal series.

Blues 5, North Stars 3

Brett Hull's first goal capped a three-goal first-period burst and his second thwarted a Minnesota comeback bid as the St. Louis Blues took a 3-0 lead in the Norris Division semifinals with a victory over the North Stars.
