Taking a drive up Provo Canyon should be a little safer by the end of next week: A median lane is being painted in the recently constructed portion from the mouth of the canyon to the Murdock diversion dam.

Utah Department of Transportation crews have been in the canyon since Monday, blasting the painted traffic lanes off the road and restriping the lanes to allow for an 111/2-foot middle median lane. The median lane also will provide left-hand-turn capability along that section of highway."There will be a median there by the end of next week," said Marv Christiansen, project engineer for UDOT District No. 6 in Orem. "It (the new median) came out of our concern and also the concern of people we met with, particularly Janice Reeb."

Reeb, a former member of the Provo Canyon Parkway Committee, has moved to Arizona.
