A moderate earthquake jolted Southern California Friday, causing at least one minor injury and minor damage, authorities said.

The quake, registering 4.6 on the Richter scale, struck at 1:07 p.m. PDT and was centered directly beneath Newport Beach, said Robert Finn, a spokesman for Caltech seismology lab in Pasadena.A patron eating lunch at RJs rib restaurant in Newport Beach was struck on the head by a picture frame that fell off a shelf, said restaurant manager Jim Traywick.

The quake was felt over a wide area, including as far away as downtown Los Angeles, where it swayed tall buildings.

"It felt like someone was pushing my chair from behind me," said Susan Hartzler, a public relations executive with the Ford Group in Beverly Hills.
