Barbara R. Wheeler, associate professor of social work at Brigham Young University, has been appointed director of the School of Social Work.
According to Stan L. Albrecht, dean of the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences, her appointment will take effect in midsummer as she replaces the founding director, W. Eugene Gibbons, who is stepping down from the position to concentrate on teaching and research.She has been instrumental in the development of the School of Social Work, which conducts both undergraduate and graduate programs.
Wheeler, who keeps up a private practice in clinical social work, has completed research projects analyzing the social issues of women and children. One such project was a workshop session designed to help children of divorced parents to better cope with their situation.
Wheeler, who received both master's and doctoral degrees in social work from the University of Utah, is also an accomplished writer.
